The short answer

Balloch Castle Country Park is 200 acres of woodland, parkland, formal gardens, meadow and shoreline on the south-east side of Loch Lomond, on the northern edge of Balloch. West Dunbartonshire Council runs it and says the park is accessible 24 hours a day. The castle itself is a landmark to look at rather than a visitor attraction: the National Park page we read describes repairs to keep it wind and water tight, and does not say you can go inside. For a full picture of the village next door, try Balloch village guide, and for more ideas across the park, see activities and attractions.

What you get

  • The castle and its story

    Landmark, not an attraction

The castle was designed by Robert Lugar in 1809 for John Buchanan of Ardoch, according to Parks and Gardens UK, and is listed category B. The council dates the current building to around 1800 and says the park layout has hardly changed since. Today West Dunbartonshire Council owns it and has commissioned a feasibility study into new uses, with ideas from the public including a boutique hotel, heritage centre, wedding venue and restaurant. We found no date for the study, so check the National Park Authority page before you plan around the building being open.

  • The walled garden

    Usually 10am to 3pm

The council says the walled garden is usually open between 10am and 3pm each day and is locked overnight. The park benefited from improvements funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund, including repaired paths, new trellis and new planting. We found no flowering calendar, so treat it as a quiet corner for a short loop rather than a timed display.

  • Shoreline, boathouse and slipway

    Benches and picnic tables

The loch shore is the main reason to come. There are picnic benches and seating throughout the park, particularly around the boathouse and the slipway, which the council says was boarded up and run down before its improvement works. A small food vendor trades at the slipway, but not every day, so do not count on it.

  • Trails for families

    Fairy Trail, Tree Trail, orienteering

The council lists a Fairy Trail, a Tree Trail highlighting native and exotic species, and 6 permanent orienteering trails at three levels of difficulty. We found no trail lengths or times, so pick one up from the signs in the park. Groups and schools can arrange guided walks through the Countryside Ranger service.

  • Play parks and open lawns

    Two play areas

There are several play parks, one at the loch shore and one near the Moss O’ Balloch car park. The wide lawns around the castle suit a picnic. There is no camping, no overnight parking and no drinking of alcohol in the park under its bye-laws.

  • Events in the park

    Highland Games and runs

The council says the park hosts the Loch Lomond Highland Games every July and has been the venue for major concerts including REM, Oasis and Runrig, without giving dates. On Saturday 8 August 2026, Up and Running Events organised a 5K, 10K and half marathon here on woodland trails and park paths, and we saw no 2027 date. Expect the car parks to fill on event days.

Questions people ask

Where to park for Balloch Country Park?

Use the main car park at Moss O’ Balloch by the town centre, or the smaller car park by the castle if you need the disabled bays. Both get extremely busy in summer, and the castle car park is not suitable for coaches. We found no parking charge on the council pages.

When did Oasis play Balloch Country Park?

We cannot give a date. West Dunbartonshire Council says the park has been the venue for major concerts including REM, Oasis and Runrig, but gives no years.

What is the prettiest town in Loch Lomond?

That is a matter of taste. Luss is the usual answer for the look of the village, while Balloch has the trains and the loch's southern end. Our Luss village guide covers the first.

What are the best parks to visit in Scotland?

We cover only this one in detail. Balloch Castle Country Park is a good fit if you want lochside lawns, woodland and a walled garden close to a railway station.

Is Balloch Castle Country Park free?

The council pages we read mention no entry charge and say the park is accessible 24 hours a day. They do not state a parking charge, so check the signs.

Can you go inside Balloch Castle?

We found nothing that offers visits inside. The National Park page describes repairs to keep the castle wind and water tight, and a feasibility study into future uses.

Are there toilets at Balloch Castle Country Park?

Yes. The castle toilets open 9.00am to 2.30pm in winter, longer in summer, and there are more at Balloch bus station.

Can you camp or have a barbecue in the park?

No camping, overnight parking or alcohol under the park's bye-laws. For camping rules around the loch, see the permit zones and rules. We found nothing about barbecues.
