Aberfoyle Rob Roy Hotel and where to stay

The Rob Roy Hotel, and how Aberfoyle works as a Trossachs base

The Aberfoyle Rob Roy Hotel stands beside the River Forth, a short stroll from the village, with a lounge menu in the Thistle Bar and evening meals in the Tartan Room. Its own site lists around a hundred bedrooms. We name only the places whose own sites we could read, and Aberfoyle has more.

Should you stay in Aberfoyle?

Yes, if you want the Trossachs on your doorstep. Aberfoyle is the gateway to the forest drive, Loch Ard and Ben Venue, and it has a year-round bus to Callander. No, if you need a train: we found no rail service to Aberfoyle, so you will use a car or the bus.

The Rob Roy Hotel is the one most visitors look for. Its site gives a postcode of FK8 3UX, says it is pet-friendly and lists a Thistle Bar lounge menu through the day. It does not state parking, so ask. Around it you will find holiday parks and B&Bs, which we do not name until we can read their own sites.

We give no prices, star ratings or review scores, because we have no dated source for them. Compare the same dates on the hotel's own site and one booking site.

Choose and book

  1. Decide whether Aberfoyle is your base

Aberfoyle suits the forest and the lochs. How to walk Loch Ard and Ben Venue route guide both start close by, and the Three Lochs Forest Drive entrance is about 2 miles north of the village. For a bigger town with more choice, compare a bed for the night in Callander, or try sleeping in Gartmore if the village is full.

  2. Sort out parking before you book

The Riverside car park is listed as free, with public toilets that include a Changing Places facility, but we have no overnight rule for it, so do not assume you can leave a car there overnight. Ask your property where guests leave the car. The guide to where to leave the car compares the other car parks around the loch.

  3. Plan the journey without a car

The Trossachs Explorer runs year-round between Aberfoyle and Callander, with 4 return journeys a day since it relaunched on 29 June 2026. Check the timetable before you plan around it. Getting there without a car covers the rest of the Trossachs.

  4. Pick the right season

Autumn and winter are quieter than summer weekends, and the Trossachs Explorer keeps running all year. The Three Lochs Forest Drive is closed to public vehicles from 4pm on Wednesday 30 September until spring, but the walking trails off it stay open to walkers, bikes and horse-riders, so a winter stay still has a day out built in. Ask the property whether its restaurant and bar keep their summer hours.

  5. Book direct, or compare once

Check the property's own site first for rooms, dogs, parking and dinner times, then compare once on a booking site. Booking direct keeps you on the property's own terms, and a phone call is often the quickest way to settle a dog or parking question. Where we add a partner link, the official option sits beside it.

Check before you book

  • Does your property have its own parking? The Rob Roy Hotel's site does not say.
  • Are dogs welcome, and is there a charge? The Rob Roy Hotel shows a pet-friendly badge but gives no terms.
  • Is dinner served on your arrival night? Ask about Tartan Room and Thistle Bar hours.
  • Do you need electric vehicle charging? We have not confirmed any at Aberfoyle.
  • Are you planning a drive on the forest road? It is closed to public vehicles from 4pm on Wednesday 30 September until spring, so check Forestry and Land Scotland before you rely on it.
  • Deals change daily, so we state none.

Guests who play golf can book Aberfoyle Golf Club at Braeval, founded in 1890 at the foot of the Menteith Hills. Visitors can book tee times daily, with no weekend bookings before 10am, and the first tee time is 8am. Walkers staying a night or two can use the Achray Trail, Pine Ridge Trail and Loch Drunkie Trail, which start at the forest drive car parks and run from about 1.2 km to 1.9 km.
