Lochearnhead restaurants and where to eat

One hotel restaurant on the loch shore, then Killin or Callander

Lochearnhead restaurants are few. The one we can verify is the Clachan Hotel, on the shore of Loch Earn, which serves breakfasts, lunches and evening meals and a Sunday roast from 12:30pm. Other places may exist, but we found none with a website we could read, so we name none. We give no ratings or prices.

Where can I eat in Lochearnhead?

Eat at the Clachan Hotel. It stands on the lochside at Lochearnhead FK19 8PU and describes its food as locally sourced, with breakfasts, lunches and evening meals, a Sunday roast served every week from 12:30pm, and packed lunches for guests exploring the area. A sample menu is on its website, and table enquiries go by phone, email or its contact page.

That is the only place we can verify. Lochearnhead is a small village at the western end of Loch Earn, and sources disagree on what else it has: the Lochearnhead Scout Station's own FAQ says there are no shops in the village, while third-party listings suggest otherwise. Do not rely on finding a shop, and bring a picnic if you are heading up Ben Vorlich or along Glen Ogle.

If the Clachan is closed, or full, the nearest alternative by road is the Four Seasons Hotel at St Fillans, at the far end of Loch Earn, which lists a restaurant and a bar on its own site. Opening times there are seasonal, and the hotel asks diners to reserve by phone, so call before you drive. Hotels and pubs in the Highlands change their hours with the season, so always check the venue's own website or phone before a long drive for a meal.

If you are heading for the Lochearnhead Hotel, check its current status directly before you travel: we do not list it because we could not confirm that it is open. For more choice, drive or take the bus to pubs and tearooms in Killin or Callander cafes and pubs. For the village and Loch Earn, open the Lochearnhead village guide.

We list one place in Lochearnhead, one at St Fillans and three nearby villages and towns. We give no prices, ratings or review scores.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether Lochearnhead is a stop or a base

The village sits on the A84 at the foot of Glen Ogle, about 1.5 hours by car from Glasgow. It suits a lunch on a drive north or a meal after fishing, sailing or a walk on Loch Earn's shores. For a longer stay, look at the bigger towns.

  2. Eat before Ben Vorlich or Glen Ogle

Lochearnhead is a walking and cycling start: Ben Vorlich rises above the south shore and National Cycle Network Route 7 passes through. Eat before you set out and carry food, because we could not confirm a shop.

  3. Plan the Sunday

The Clachan Hotel serves a roast from 12:30pm every week. Book by phone or email, because the pages we read give no cut-off time.

  4. Without a car

Bus C60 runs between Killin and Callander through Lochearnhead, and Ember E4 coaches call in on the Edinburgh to Fort William route. Public transport takes about 2.5 hours from Glasgow and 2 hours 50 minutes from Edinburgh, so build in a long day.

  5. Eat elsewhere on the same road

If the Clachan is closed or full, Killin and Callander are the next places to look. Their pages list the venues we could check.

  6. If the one venue is closed

Hours at small Highland hotels change with the season, and the Clachan's page gives no opening times beyond the Sunday roast. Phone 01567 830247 before you set out. If nobody answers, drive east to St Fillans, west to Killin, or south through Strathyre to Callander, and check each venue's own website before you go. Do not rely on a map listing for hours.

  7. Picnic and supplies

The Scout station's FAQ says there are no shops in the village, with Killin the nearest. On the road south, Strathyre has a village car park and a picnic site, which suits a packed lunch if you buy food in Killin or Callander first. The Clachan offers packed lunches to guests, so ask when you book a room.

Check before you go

  • Hours: the Clachan Hotel gives the Sunday roast start time and no other opening times. Phone before you travel, especially out of season.
  • If the Clachan is shut: the Four Seasons Hotel at St Fillans (01764 685333) lists seasonal times, so check its site, and Killin has its own page of venues.
  • Shops: sources disagree on whether Lochearnhead has one. The Scout station says there is none, so bring food for a walk.
  • Dogs: the hotel offers dog-friendly rooms, but its page does not say whether dogs may eat with you. Ask.
  • Lochearnhead Hotel: we could not verify whether it is open, so we do not list it.
  • Prices and ratings: we give none. Use the hotel's sample menu.

If you are heading on, these places have their own food and drink pages.

  • KillinAt the head of Loch Tay, with pubs and a coffee shop and smokehouse counter.
  • CallanderThe Trossachs town, with a country pub, a bakery and a lochside restaurant.
