Is Gartocharn worth it?
Gartocharn is worth a stop for Duncryne Hill, known locally as the Dumpling. The hill is only 141 m high, but the National Park says it has arguably the best views of Loch Lomond and the southern Highlands. The village sits on the A811 a little south of Drymen, with RSPB Loch Lomond just north of it. Staying overnight? Look at accommodation around the loch.

Things to do in Gartocharn
-
Duncryne Hill (the Dumpling)
Take Duncryne Road and go through the gate onto the hill. The climb is gradual at first and steeper near the top, and the ground is muddy, especially in winter, so wear boots or wellies. The top has views up the loch, across to the Campsie Fells and, on a very good day, to the hills of Arran. The village asks walkers to stick to the path, light no fires, take litter home and keep dogs and children in sight.
-
RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond
The reserve is at High Wards Farm, 0.7 miles from the village on the A811 towards Drymen. A nature hub has toilets, and a 1.3 km trail runs from the car park to the loch shore. Dogs are welcome on a short lead on the paths, and livestock graze the reserve. The RSPB says its postcode does not work for sat nav, so search for RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond on a map. Check the RSPB site for opening hours and charges on the day.
-
The Aber path
The National Park describes the Aber Path along the shore of Loch Lomond as a beautiful walk from the village, with sand martins, house martins, swifts and ospreys to look out for. The RSPB also uses the Aber right of way as a second way into the reserve, with parking at the Millennium Hall. A walking diversion was in place when we checked because of a damaged bridge, so look at the RSPB page before you go.
